controlling bad URLs

Hi all,

Whenever I type in a bad URL, either just a typo error, or a URL that really
doesn't exist, MSIE takes me all over the place. Sometimes it goes to some
search engine page that tries to hijack my PC. It pops up about 4 ads, and
then it wants to change my home page, and who knows what else it is doing in
the background.

How to I control MSIE so that it just gives me a simple 404 page not found
error without taking me to some site that I DON'T want to visit.

Thanks for your help.

First eliminate any scumware.
See

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

**Post your HijackThis log to

Alternative download pages for Ad-Aware, Spybot, HijackThis and CWShredder
may be found on this page:

If nothing there helps, please post back to this thread.

Thanks Frank, lots of good info.

I already run WinPatrol, AdAware and SpyBot. I'll try the others, too.
