I have ultra dma66 controller card which has 2 hard drived fitted to each of
the 2 channels.
they are both set as master drives and work ok.
The problem I have is when I add another hard drive to any of the channels
and set it as a slave, windows xp will not start.
The drives shows as a slave on initial boot up, but as soon as the "starting
windows xp" screen starts the screen just freezes. If I disconnect the slave
drive windows starts ok again.I have downloaded the latest drivers but
nothing seems to work.

A few things to try....

1) Make sure the master is really set to master and is the last drive on the
chain. A secondary drive goes in the middle.

2) Set both drives to cable select. Your BIOS will use the drive on IDE0
that is farthest on the cable as the boot device.

3) Put the working drives on one cable (don't forget to change the
non-booting master to slave) and put the new drive as master on the second
channel.

Also, some drives need to have a jumper set so as to tell them that a slave
drive is also connected onto the same IDe cable.
