How do I control which programs load at startup?

I have a zillion programs that load automatically when I start my PC. I
want to change this.

Thanks,

M

Why? Just to save a few seconds in boot-up time?

If you must, go to Run/msconfig
Your only problem now is to work out what to disable - better left as is.

One of the first things is to pay attention when installing new
programs because some programs insidiously put themselves in Startup.
But you can delete shortcuts that startup unwanted programs.

Look in C:? Documents & Settings/All Users/Programs/Startup
Also C:? Documents & Settings/Your login/Programs/Startup

But before you delete any shortcuts perhaps first make a copy.

On each program you don't want to start automatically, check its
Options to see if it has the choice not to start. Many can easily
and best be stopped that way. If that doesn't work, run MSCONFIG
from the Start | Run line, and on the Startup tab, uncheck the
programs you don't want to start automatically.

What do you want to change and why? Don't willy-nilly get rid of
everything that starts automatically. Some (but not all) of
these programs can impact your performance all day long. What you
should do is determine what each program is, what its value is to
you, and what the cost in performance is of its running all the
time. You can get more information about these with google
searches and by asking about specifics here.

Once you have that information, you can make an intelligent
informed decision about what you want to keep and what you want
to get rid of.
