So, here's what happened:
I was installing Norton Systemworks on my Windows 2000
Pro machine when my computer suddenly had a power
failure -- not sure why; it just shut off spontaneously
in the middle of Setup. When I rebooted, I got a
bluescreen error message reading "...SYMEVENT.SYS could
not be loaded." I can get past this screen by rebooting
in Safe Mode, but modifying this file doesn't seem to
work. Moreover, and my key issue as it sits now, somehow
my Control Panel "Add/Remove Programs" app became
corrupted in this process and produces a malformed window
when I try to run it, and I can't figure out another way
of uninstalling Norton Systemworks. Please advise; any
input is appreciated. Please post to the newsgroup; if
this becomes an issue best handled direwctly, I will
consider handling this via email.
Thank you one and all--
