Control Panel Closes

I just built a new PC and installed a new OEM copy of Vista Home
Premium. I'm having a strange problem where the control panel
sometimes closes automatically as soon as it opens. All I see is the
"window opening" animation, followed immediately by the "window
closing" animation.

This behavior is erratic - sometimes the control panel opens, and
sometimes it doesn't. There seem to be a few other windows that
exhibit the same strange behavior at the same time, and they all work
or fail in conjunction with each other.

Any ideas as to what is causing this problem?

I'm not sure of the cause, but it's not an infrequent problem with Control
Panel opening in Vista.

One thing you can do, as a workaround is to type "control panel" (lose
quotes) into Search box above the Start button and drag it to the desktop
and see if that will open normally.

If that doesn't provide a solution, and you have a Vista DVD, I'd put it in
and run Startup Repair.

If you elect to run Startup repair from the Vista DVD (it can fix major
components in Vista; it's gooid for more than startup problems, and the Win
RE team simply screwed up when they named it not understanding its full
functionality):

Startup Repair will look like this when you put in the Vista DVD:

It will automatically
take you to this on your screen:

That will allow you to go to the Vista setup that has a Repair link on the
lower left corner>click it and then you'll see a gray backgrounded list and
I want you to click Startup Repair from it and follow the directions.

Click Startup Repair, the link at the top and after it scans>click OK and
let it try to repair Vista. It will tell you if it does, and if it
doesn't, try System Restore from the Recovery Link on the DVD. If these
don't work booting into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key and using System
Restore from one of the safe modes besides VGA may work. That means you
have the option to try 4 different safe modes to get to system restore, (one
from the Recovery link on the DVD)and sometimes one will work when the
others won't.

Have you installed anything else on the system? Also, you might check Event
Viewer assuming that will open. Open the Start Menu, type Event Viewer in
the search box, when you see the security prompt, click continue and it
should open.

If that doesn't resolve it type CMD in Start Search on the Start Menu. When
you see CMD at the top of the Start Menu, right click, select "Run As
Administrator." When the command prompt opens, type

"sfc /scannow" without the quotes and let it run.

If that fails to resolve it, check manufacturer websites to make sure all
your device drivers are up to date, the same with all of your software, make
sure the apps are Vista compatible and that you've installed any updates.
Also, make sure you have no malware or any viruses. If all is fine you may
need to do a repair, boot from the Vista DVD and choose the repair option at
the setup screen.

My Vista Install screen doesn't have the repair option shown in the
pic you posted.

It's OEM, if that makes a difference.

OK, I was trying to run the CD from within Windows. Booting from the
CD showed the repair prompt, which didn't work. I see that lots of
people are having this problem, as well as the blurry text problem and
Googling hasn't brought any light to the situation yet. I guess I'll
just have to wait out the growing pains.
