We've got a real similar sounding deal at our house.
Problem is I don't know if it's been that way from the
beginning because I don't use this machine very often.

CTRL, Win logo, ALT (both sides of space bar) do nothing. I
agree it's annoying. Uninstalled keyboard driver. Plugged
in different keyboard, same thing. Bought and installed USB
keyboard, same thing.

DOS boot, CTRL C works, ^C shows up. Command prompt from
Windows doesn't give the ^C.

Spent an hour on the phone with Sony tech. support before
they finally resorted to recommending system recovery. I
don't want to do that if at all possible. Suspect something
in the registry now. Have seen a possibility by searching
for ways to disable these keys.

Help please, thanks.

Yes, we tried that, too. We had a few different keyboards
here and I tried all of them. I've also looked at every
aspect of software settings and everything seems to be in
order. I am a strong user of keyboard shortcuts and find
it difficult to work without them. The Newsgroup was my
last hope. I'm not giving up.

There is a shareware keyboard test you can use to test the hardware at
http://www.passmark.com/products/keytest.htm
It shows the current language code (should be 409 for English), BIOS and
Windows key codes, various key times, and the key name. Here are the
Windows and BIOS key codes for my generic 102 keyboard:

KEY WIN BIOS
LCTL -- 0x11 0x1d
LWIN -- 0x5b 0x5b
LALT -- 0x12 0x38
RALT -- 0x12 0x38
RWIN -- 0x5c 0x5c
MENU -- 0x5d 0x5d
RCTL -- 0x11 0x1d

If you think your keyboard has been remapped, check
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout for a value called
"Scancode Map" (REG_BINARY value). Deleting it, if it exists, will return
the keyboard to the default mapping. See
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hwdev/tech/input/w2kscan-map.mspx for more
details.
