continuous wave throughout one slide

Hi,

I have a 1 minute wave I would like to play, unimpeded
throughout one of the presention slides. Works well with Powerpoint2000, but
not with Powerpoint2002.: the wave stops with the next animation, even
though "stop previous sound" is deactivated. Is continuous sound impossible
in Powerpoint2002?

Thank you,

Siggi

What are the start and stop settings for the sound file? Have you set the
sound file to play through the slide, or do you have it set to stop "on
Click"?

Yes, continuous sound is possible in PowerPoint 2002:

It sounds like you need to check your Custom Animations.

It is a German version of Powerpoint2002. I cannot
find anything in the menu resembling to "start setting",
"stop setting". However, this is what I find (my own
translation) in the small single-foil test presentation
I created to send around for help (to no avail yet):

These are the only sound options offered by the menu
and set by me:

- sound: dingLong.wav

- after animation: do not stop
(other menu commands available here, but not used
are: "stop after animation" and "stop on next click")

These are the "effect options" set by me for the follow-up
animated object:

- direction: out

- sound: (no sound)
(other menu commands available here, but not used
are: "stop previous sound" or choose a sound from
a list. This list also contains dingLong.wav)

- after animation: do not stop

This all works perfectly well with Powerpoint2000!
Why not with Powerpoint2002?

Thank you so far,

Siggi

If it would be easier, there is a German PowerPoint newsgroup, but I see
that you have posted there and have not received a reply.

It sounds like you have attached the sound to the animation. If I have
misunderstood, please correct me.

The sound file should continue until it has completed. If there are other
animations and they are set to play "after previous", the sound should
continue. If, however, the subsequent animation is set to animated "on
mouse click", the sound file will quit. Is this possibly the problem?

After pondering on answers from Sonia and Geetesh,
that still lead to no solution, I did something crazy:
putting the presentation file and the WAV files INTO
ONE folder. Suddenly the whole thing works fine
with Powerpoint2002! Should this be the solution?
(After all, Powerpoint2000 does not seem to care
where the WAV files are, or if they are present at all)

Please tell me, anyone, whether this is the solution!

Thank you,

Siggi

Siggi,
You might find this FAQ entry of help:

You might also find it helpful to read the FAQ in your native language. Just
so happens that Steve has taken care of that one for you too....

I don't know whether that is THE solution, but it is always a great idea to
keep all files for a presentation in the same folder. I wonder if by moving
and re-linking the file you fixed some glitch (technical term there) within
how PowerPoint was handling the sound file.

(PS: I am pretty sure that you already knew about the link to the German
version of the FAQ, but I posted it for completeness sake on the part of
future browsers.)

Siggi solved his problem by placing all his sounds in the same file as the
presentation <g>. Now it works with PowerPoint 2002.

Sorry I was overjoyed to hear now a background sound that was mute before
the folder trick. This background sound now runs continously through the
presentation, undisturbed by follow-up animations or sounds (I can clearly
hear them simultaneously)

BUT...

the original problem still holds:

a wave that starts with an animation stops abruptly when the next animation
is called upon in Powerpoint2002;

yet Powepoint2000 works fine!

What can I do?

Sorry, that nobody had an answer for you in the German PowerPoint Newsgroup
(most unusual). If you like, you can mail your test presentation to me for
testing, I'm using PPT 2002, too.

Kind regards,
Ute

It sounds like you have attached the sound to the animation.

Correct!
The sound file should continue until it has completed. If there are other
animations and they are set to play "after previous", the sound should
continue. If, however, the subsequent animation is set to animated "on
mouse click", the sound file will quit. Is this possibly the problem?

Correct again! This is the problem that does not exist in Powepoint2000!

(Thank you Sonia for correctly guessing what I wanted to say.
I do apologize for my bad Denglish!)

Why then did Powerpoint2002 loose the optioin to set a subseqent animation
"on mouse click" WITHOUT stopping a previous sound?

Siggi

I can't answer that question, but now you know. <G> It is very possible
that PowerPoint 2002 has been made to work correctly and that it shouldn't
have worked in PowerPoint 2000. I just don't know.

Terrific, Ute, I will do that tomorrow morning (have not got
this file at home). But view Sonia's latest comment above,
at 15:57! Sounds not very promising. Looks like Microsoft
did not like what I liked in Powerpoint2000!

Kind regards to you,

Siggi

Big thanks
**********
to all of you who participated in this
discussion. In particular I want to thank

*** Sonia. You pinpointed my problem
down despite my clumsy wording, made it
clear to me what was amiss. And thanks for
teaching me how to disguise my email
address (too late; I drown each day in spam
since joining this newsgroup; but I like your
picture gallery!)

*** Geetesh. You taught me how to run
Sound Across Slides and were willing to
spend quite some time in discussing my
problem.

*** Ute. It was very kind of you to test my
file. You found an undisclosed change from
PP2000 to PP2002, and you offered a
workaround, i.e., using sound inserted to a
slide rather than attached to an animation.
This works well when applicable. I listened
to background music and up to two different
sounds on each slide, playing
simultaneously, both in PP2000 and
PP2002, wow!

But then...

Big teardrops
***********

1) Inserting sound objects to a slide
increases clutter, even if you hide them off
the visible area.

2) If, on short notice, I have to add a small
change to my presentation, it is easy in
PP2000: I have the sound in question
attached to an animation, in the first place,
and switch from option "no sound" to "stop
previous sound" in the effects' menu of one
of the following animations. So simple, just
change "no sound" to "stop previous sound",
or vice versa! And the preceding sound will
play or stop, or vice versa. And the beauty
is, only the preceding sound will be stopped,
the background music that had started
earlier does continue. Great!

3) This feature is lost in PP2002. Both
commands "no sound" and "stop previous
sound" have the same effect, they both stop
a preceding sound attached to an animation!
Sorry Sonia, I think this a program flaw and
not an advantage: a command when not
executed should not have the same effect as
when executed. And in PP2002, a sound
inserted to the slide, apparently can only
be stopped by a follow-up animation by
stopping everything, even the background
music (see above for how well PP2000
handles this situation).

For me, a step backward.

Anyway, thank you again, all of you

Siggi
