Hi all. My husband's computer won't boot up. It goes
immediately to a black screen that says Windows did not
start correctly and you have options to start in Safe
Mode, or Start Normally, or Use Most Recent Settings
(that worked). Selecting any of these options has the
same result - the black Windows screen with the logo
appears and then after a few seconds the machine restarts
and you are back at the black screen with the options on
it. He did not install any new hardware or software.
I tried using the repair console from the Win XP CD. I
can get to the command prompt. I ran chkdsk which said
it fixed some errors but it didn't help. I also followed
a Knowledge Base article that replaced the kernel32.dll
file with a new one from the CD, in case it got
corrupted. RAMtest didn't find any errors.
I can't get in to run a virus scan. The hard drive was
pretty full, but I don't know how full.
Does anyone have any ideas? It is an Athlon 1700xp,
running Win XP Home.
