I have a workstation on a small peer to peer network. They
all run WIN 2000.

One of the workstations restarted itself while within an
application.

I am unable to start the operating system as it
continuously restarts. I have tried to do a repair using
the installation cd.

It there any way of halting the restart process and
loading the operating system.

The reboot that you are getting is probably caused by a stop error. You
are not seeing the error because the system is set to reboot on a stop
error and to not write a dump.

What type of repair did you do, ERD or a repair install?
Have you tried safe mode and if so what is the last thing you see on the
screen?
Where does the reboot occur?

If you did not try a repair install you can try copying over the
original system hive since it will not have any 3rd party drivers or
services. I would first run chkdsk.

Boot from Windows 2000 CD into Recovery Console and enter the following
chkdsk /p
cd \winnt\system32\config
rename system system.xxx
copy \winnt\repair\system

If this works then the work begins in finding out what 3rd party driver
or service is causing the stop error. You can check the system event log
to see what the stop error you are getting.
