My disk read LED comes on every few seconds and continues to do so as long
as the machine is on. As there is no program activity this should not be
happening. any suggestions?

Could be a virus, or it could be someone trying to access
your computer from the internet??

There are a number of background tasks and functions that can result
in access to the hard drive.

Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring up the Windows Task Manager. Watch the
CPU usage column and see which tasks are using CPU cycles at the same
time as the disk activity occurs.

Hint:
If you maximize the Task Manager window to full screen and then click
twice on the CPU column the list will be sorted by CPU usage with the
most active items at the top of the list.

Good luck

Thank you for the suggestion. I tried it out and the results were
inconclusive.
The only tasks running were "System idle process" - 98 and "taskmgr.exe" -2.
I tried disabling each task independantly and each one caused a system
shutdown. However, under the task manager application I was able to see a
toggling with taskmgr.exe similar to the hard disk led read light on my
drive... although not in precise unison.
