Sorry, I don't know who it was that wrote to me and told me how to get
my computer to stop opening .exe files with .xlr. I did what you told
me and I re-started the computer. Went to winamp.com and downloaded the
latest version and it saved as winamp3_0-full.exe.xlr.

After I followed the earlier instructions and rebooted, my .avi files
all converted to Winamp. I had been using Quicktime as the default so I
don't know why they're now being opened by Winamp.

Because when you installed Winamp, it took over that file association. If
you wish to keep your associations intact when installing such applications,
most such applications offer a custom install that allows you to select and
deselect the files with which you wish to associate them.

Open Windows Explorer, find the file of the type you wish to re-associate,
select it, then right click while depressing the shift key, the context menu
should contain an "Open With" option. Select that, then choose the
application with which you wish the file to open and be sure to check the
"Always open with" option.

What file should .exe be opened with?

EXE is an executable file that opens itself.

Certain files are executable programs, others are data or
content files, such as .xls .doc. .wks

Other files contain data of a general form and may be opened
with a variety of possible programs. For instance a jpeg
picture file could be opened with Windows and FAX Viewer,
PhotoShop or Paint. It can even be opened with WordPad but
is will just be the code text.

But the problem is, it opens up in my Microsoft Works spreadsheet.
Actually now it's opening up in Winamp. And of course it's not executing.

Perhaps if you'd say exactly what program or file it is, you
could get some better help.

Right click on the file while in Windows Explorer and select
properties, you should get a series of windows which will
tell you version numbers, original name, maybe even author.

You have to take the last extension off it.

Windows looks at the group of characters after the last period in a name. It looks this up in the registry. XLR is excel (or winamp for you)

The registry will say xlr is opened by winamp.exe, windows then contrructs a command line

winamp <name and path of file you clicked)

and it treated as if you typed it in Start - Run (for most files - there are three ways of doing it)

exe don't place anything in front of the file clicked so the file clicked becomes the whole name.

You need to rename your file so the extension is exe not xlr.

This is what it says under the General tab:

winamp3_0-full.exe
The icon next to it is the one for Microsoft Works Spreadsheet
Type of file: Microsoft Works Spreadsheet or Chart
Opens with Winamp3

There are no other tabs except for the General tab. Attributes at the
bottom has Archive checked off, nothing else.

Hope this is what you're looking for. Let me know if it's not.

It sounds like the Winamp file is the downloaded installer
program, version 3.0. It seems that somehow this files
corrupted and associated with WORKS spreadsheets.

WORKS spreadsheets have a wks extension (WORKS word
processor is wps and the database is wdb [if I remember
correctly]) Most likely during the installation the file
association table was not set correctly.

Open WinAmp and look for a file types or file association
setting (I don't have WinAmp installed so I can't say
exactly) but you should have a Tools, Options or File menu
which will have the associated file types... clear the file
extension for files that you don't play on WinAmp. (WinAmp
might have a help FAQ on their website and certainly should
have built-in help.

If all else fails, you could remove your WORKS and WinAmp
programs and reinstall them being careful about what files
you associate.

I'm still having problems. I've uninstalled Winamp, Microsoft Works and
Quicktime and when I reinstalled them I'm still having executable files
showing as .exe.xlr. I've tried to re-download quicktime now but of
course since it's an executable file, I can't open it since it's got the
..exe.xlr extension. The wierd thing is, when you click once on the icon
it doesn't show you the .xlr extension, it just shows the .exe.
However, when I was downloading it it was downloading with the .exe.xlr
extension.

When I right click and choose Properties, it says the type of file is
Microsoft Works Spreadsheet or Chart. Opens with Unknown Application.
The file name is iTunesSetup.exe.

Any ideas? I'm going crazy!

Open Windows Explorer, TOOLS, Folder Options... on the view
tab be sure that there is no check mark in the box that says
"hide extensions for known file types" and on the other tabs
check to see what extensions are associated with what
actions.

It may be that you have a virus that is changing file
names/extensions.
