On a continuing basis the 0x80500c error box keeps popping up. I don't know
if I have ever had a successful Windows Defender scan. I addressed this
problem with a previous inquiry without success. I've sent several E-mail
requests to a 'Mike Triet (MSFT)' without any reply or response. Why isn't
there a solution to this problem?

Hi there.

I don't seem to have ever received an email from you, although I can't say
for sure without knowing your email address. I did reply to a few different
folks here in the newsgroups who sent me email that I never saw a response
from. Not sure if my reply was eaten by a spam filter or something similar.

Please make sure you are using the right email address (mtreit @
microsoft.com, but without the spaces) and try sending me another mail.

This error (which is rather generic) typically occurs because of failure to
load a registry hive for some reason. It is expected that if you are
encountering this error, every scan will fail every time. It is not a
transient issue.

We are investigating a few different causes - we've already fixed several,
but there are definitely some remaining cases where this can happen.

If you send me an email (or just give me your email address) I can follow up
with some tools to help diagnose the cause of the problem.

Thanks

-Mike

Thanks for your response. My E-mail address is (e-mail address removed). I
believe that the problem was mine in that I used the following address for
you: (e-mail address removed) instead of the full Microsoft domain name. I guess I
shouldn't take some suggestions so literally. These acronyms, abbreviations,
etc. can drive me crazy.

I'm still getting this error every time with:

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1051.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1303.0
Signature Version: 1.14.1389.7

Windows Defender scan has encountered an error and terminated.
Scan ID: {704122AB-2B65-4F8D-AC85-B109EAE42329}
Scan Type: AntiSpyware
Scan Parameters: Quick Scan
User: NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE
Error Code: 0x8050800c
Error description: An unexpected problem occurred. Install any available
updates, and then try to start the program again. (To check for updates,
click Start, click All Programs, and then click Windows Update.)

Mike, I'll send you an email.
