Continually Broken Network Connections

I have a Windows XP client on a network full of Windows
2000 pro clients. Whenever the XP client goes to sleep,
or logs off it breaks the connection to the network. When
my user logs on the Internet connection is instantly
available but the network drives and network printers are
not available. This prompts my XP user to keep needing to
access their network drives (to logon to the system) to
print to our network printers. The support database
suggests to "check the save password box" but in this case
there is no password box in the system logon. How do I:

1. Keep the network connection from being broken, or
2. Make it so the client automatically connects to its
drives and printers?
