I see this occasionally on one system or another--and with different
updates. I don't think this is an issue with this patch per se.
Usually what I do to resolve it is to download the patch directly and run
the installer myself after saving it to the desktop.
Assuming you are on SP2, here's the download link:

Download, save, and run the downloaded file. If the AU icon is still down
there, let it install as well, then reboot and see if the cycle has been
broken.
If it has not, you would probably be best off calling Microsoft--calls for
issues relating to security patches or virus infections are
free--1-866-pcsafety in the US or Canada. Elsewhere, call the local
Microsoft subsidiary support phone number and ask for the free help with
these issues.
