Continual Dialogue Boxes

Thanks guys for the earlier advice. One of the reasons I was concerned about
backing up is that I am getting numerous (at least 6-8 a day) dialogue boxes
of the type: 'Program "Whatever" has encountered a problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience etc etc. Please tell Microsoft'. It
particularly seems to affect programs running in the background. I'm running
firewall, ant-virus, trojan, spyware etc. and have no idea as to which area I
should be looking for a problem in. This afternoon even Windows Explorer fell
over.

Hi Don.. Any pattern to the Programs closing down? What are the names of
the programs that are closing? Do they happen when the box is starting,
after it's been up for awhile, or when it's shutting down? When did this
problem start occuring? Was it after an upgrade of any software? I assume
that anti virus and spyware can't find anything?

Thanks for the reply. They happen anytime, even after my system has been
running happily for an hour. Though I have noticed that switching accounts
tends to bring down a communications assist program. But it has affected my
firewall, Windows explorer, Peer Guardian and IE fell over while I was
attempting to type this!
It first started happening about a week ago, appears to be getting worse and
I have not upgraded any software. The anti virus and spyware are silent.

Wow.. Not sure what that might be. Are all of the programs that are dying
internet related? I wonder if your Internet connection is flaking out? Is
your Windows XP all up to date? If you reply with the dialog by sending the
information to Microsoft, do you get any second dialogs with solution
suggestions?

No, they're not all internet related. For example, my TV tuner fell over. my
Folding at Home has fallen, Quake (not on line) has fallen. In fact, it seems
that every program I have has at some time crashed with the dreaded dialog
box. I have sent about 3/4 of the reports to Microsoft but there's never been
a response. I'm thinking about turning my computer into a boat anchor.(By the
way, I've run disk cleanup, disk error check, disk defrag and a memory test.
Nada!)
