Hi Adam R
What is the content.ie5 directory that is located in my
profile and why does removing cookies and temporary
internet files from internet explorer, internet options
not clean the randomly named directories inside of
content.ie5. I would like to purge them. Any help is
appreciated.
Sure can. Although they're supposed to be there and only grow as large as
your TIF max settings permit.
However, you have to do so in MS-DOS Mode in Win98:

<quote>
Shut down all programmes and boot into DOS...
Run the following commands from the windows directory, typically
c:\windows\>smartdrv
deltree history (deletes the history folder)
deltree tempor~1 (deletes the IE cache)
deltree cookies (deletes the cookies folder)
deltree recent~
Reboot using ctrl, alt, del if using Windows 95 or 98.

Or....here's a very easy way to do it:
Just rename the folder Content.IE5 to whatever you want. After the next
reboot, you will be able to delete the entire old folder Content.IE5 with
all its files. Windows will create a new Content.IE5 folder with a clean
index.dat and 4 brand-new sub-folders. Same for Windows\Cookies or
Windows\History, just rename the folder Cookies in another name and it will
be possible to delete the Index.dat in Cookies after a reboot. Then you can
just delete the renamed files after the new one is created.
or........
Run System Tools utility - Disk CleanUP. Then in IE, click on Tools>Internet
Options> under Temporary Internet files, click "Delete Files". This will
remove most of the old files there. If you have a Cable/DSL link, then in
Tools - Internet Options - Advanced tab - and place a check by "Empty
Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed" and is will delete
the cache files each time you close your browser, instead of them hanging
around. NOTE: Not recommended for dial-up.

Users are generally advised to do this only when corruption in these folders
is suspected. Otherwise, go to IE Tools>Internet
Options>General>TIF>Settings and decrease 'Amount of disk space to use'
setting to the bare minimum. IMO anything higher than 50 MB should only be
needed by those still using dial-up.
If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.
Hope this helps
