Hi All,

I'm new to Outlook and I want to confirm some things to make sure I
understand everything:

1) Outlook has no real 'address book' as other email clients do. If
you store an email address, it basically becomes a 'contact' and is
stored in the Contacts folder, correct?

2) How can I make it so that I can type in the persons name, like
their first name, and Outlook will complete it with their email
address. We have this at work, but I do not know how it works.......

3) Where are the mail files kept, so I can back everything up.....

Thanks in advance!

1) Correct.

2) Outlook does this automatically, based on names in your Contacts folder and names you've sent messages to in the past.

3) In an Exchange Server mailbox or a .pst file. Look at the File | Data File Management dialog.

#2 - Does it work with both the Full Name and email address? So, if I
would type in Sue....it would fill in your address, or if I type in
your email address, it would also fill that in........

#3 - I know that the contacts are kept in a .pst file, but what about
all your email folders? Where are those? I assume that if I back
those up, and if I ever have to re-install, I can put them back and
have access to them.........

2) I don't understand. If you type in the full email address, Outlook is going to use that email address. It doesn't need any more information than that.

3) Same.

What if I just type in the persons real name, like "Sue Mosher". Here
at work it will bring up the email address......is that automatic? I
tried it last night at home, and when I typed in someones name, it just
left the name there, which of course will not work as "Brad" is not a
valid email address........

If you have a contact in your Contacts folder with that name and a valid email address, Outlook will "resolve" the name and change the display to show the name underlined in the To box.

Outlook can't give you addresses that is doesn't know about.
