contacts folder exists, but address book vanishes

I recently upgraded OS from Win98 to XP. They had to do a complete upgrade
and so I lost all MS Office software and had to reinstall.

When I started office, there was no old messages, none of the folders I had
painstakingly set up. This seems to have been resolved by finding the old
outlook.pst file, moving it to the new program directory and changing its
name to mailbox.pst

However, although all of my contacts are restored in the contacts folder,
when I try to use the address book, it comes up empty. Ditto typing in a
name and expecting the program to fill in the email address.

Any ideas on this?

Make sure the folder is set to display as an Outlook Address Book;
rightclick the folder-> Properties-> tab Outlook Address Book

If it's greyed out you'll need to add the address book by Tools-> E-mail
Accounts and choose to add an Address Book

The problem is, it is NOT greyed out and the box is already checked "Use
this folder as an address book"

Seems like it should work.

Remove the address book service via Tools-> E-mail Accounts, restart Outlook
and add it again. By renaming the pst-file you've probably broke it. Next
time don't rename the pst-file but connect to it by File- Open-> Outlook
Data File... and configure it as your default delivery location in Tools->
E-mail Accounts

Well that certainly didn't work. Now Outlook won't start at all, says there
is a component missing.

This isn't getting particularly better. Do I need to reinstall the program?

UPDATE

OK once I reinstalled outlook, I now have an address book. It's not the one
I originally had but appears instead to be the one I cross reference with my
palm pilot.

However, it will work.

This is one of those fixes where I 'm not sure exactly what I did right or
what I did wrong but it turned out ok.

Thanks
