I somehow managed to delete my contacts folder from the view in the
navigation pane but not from the icon pane below. In addition my address book
is empty. My suspicion is that the two issues are related. How can I retrieve
my address book and reinstate my contacts folder in the folder list.

Yes, I am using Outlook 2003
I tried to follow the instructions given in article ID 28763.
Unable to follow instructions because in Outlook 2003 there is no folder
list available from the View menu. There is a navigation pane; however my
Contacts folder is not visible. There is a Contacts icon in the section below
the navigation pane.
Since I cannot right click the Contacts folder I can't direct Outlook to use
it as my address book.
I hope I am making sense.

Doubt it. Are we to assume Outlook 2003?
State to which view you are referring.
The Mail View will not display the Contacts Folder.
The Contacts View and Folder List View will.
Verify that your Contacts actually do exist.
If they do, then just configure your Outlook Address Book correctly:

Why can you not just click on Contacts and go to the Contacts view? You will
see your Contacts Folder there.
Hover over the icons at the bottom of the navigation pane. See Folder view?

There is no longer a Contacts folder in file folders seen in the Navigation
Pane. Hovering over the Contact icon at the bottom of the Navigation Pane
does nothing. Right clicking over the icon offers two options; A) Open in a
new window and B) Navigation Pane Options
BTW--This is MS Office Professional 2003

I said to use the Folder List icon.
Sounds like you just need to reset the navigation pane.
