Contact surname last

A

AuthorAnne

I need to have my contacts with first names first, but Vista Mail isn't
working for me. Some of them are first name first, the rest are surname
first. I've tried manually changing them around after double clicking on each
name, but there's no way to save. They flip back as before as soon as I go
back to the contact list.

Any clues, please?

In the Contacts folder:
Change the View to "Details".
Right-click on the "Name" column heading, click on "First Name", then click
on "Last Name"
Click on the "Last Name" heading to sort by that, or click on "First Name"
heading to sort by that.

In a Create Mail window:
Click on To:
Click on the "Name" column heading... it cycles thru 4 different sorts

Thanks, Dave. I've tried all this, and agree, it should fix things. But it
doesn't. For some reason, only a handful of names switch to first name when I
follow these directions carefully. And when in create mail, the To/Name
column button only give 2 options--A to Z, and Z to A.

I must have set it up wrong or something, as no matter what I do, I can't
get the whole list (it's large) to show first names first.

Would appreciate further help, please.

When you edit a Contact, there is a 'Full Name' field on the 'Name and
E-mail' tab. If you click the drop arrow on that field, you will see
choices such as:

First Last
Last First
Last, First

This field also controls the naming of the Contact file (selecting a
different one will rename the file).

Now here's the important part: Only Contacts that have the First Last
construction for Full Name will cycle through all four sort options in the
'Select Recipients' dialog. So Contacts that are 'refusing' to sort on
First name probably have a <Last, First> Full Name field.

Which list are you looking at, the contacts folder, or in the Select
Recipients window after clicking on To: ?
In the Select Recipients window, you can click on the Name column header 4
times to get:
first, last (a-z)
first, last (z-a)
last, first (a-z)
last, first (z-a)

So, I'm not sure what the problem is...
When you open a contact to edit, do you see an entry for:
First Name
Last Name
Full Name

What is the format of the Full name?
first last
last first
last, first

You should be able to click on "Ok" to save.

Thanks, Keith. My, what an involved setup! I have hundreds of names in there.
Do I have to go through one by one and change them all? Or is there a quick
method?

How did you import them into Windows Mail?
Perhaps there's a way to change them in the original program, or use Excel
to change them in a .CSV file, and re-import them..... or something like
that.

Thanks, Dave. I've tried all these things. I think the whole system is messed
up, as a few change their order, but the rest stay surname first.

I imported from a .csv file I'd saved on disk from my old computer (Outlook
address/contact book). Maybe I should delete everything and import from my
gmail account.

I've got a script I wrote last year to convert First Last contacts to Last
First format. I'll reverse it tomorrow & post a link.

Just save the zip folder on your computer, extract the script, & launch it
with a right-click -> 'Open'. It will display an introductory message. If
you have subfolders in your Contacts folder, you will be prompted to select
which folder you want to process. Whatever folder you elect to process will
end up with 2 subfolders, one with modified contacts & one with the
originals -- it's up to you to verify you like the results & delete the
originals.
