Thanks, Keith. My, what an involved setup! I have hundreds of names in
there.
Do I have to go through one by one and change them all? Or is there a
quick
method?

:
When you edit a Contact, there is a 'Full Name' field on the 'Name and
E-mail' tab. If you click the drop arrow on that field, you will see
choices such as:
First Last
Last First
Last, First
This field also controls the naming of the Contact file (selecting a
different one will rename the file).
Now here's the important part: Only Contacts that have the First Last
construction for Full Name will cycle through all four sort options in
the
'Select Recipients' dialog. So Contacts that are 'refusing' to sort
on
First name probably have a <Last, First> Full Name field.

Thanks, Dave. I've tried all this, and agree, it should fix things.
But
it
doesn't. For some reason, only a handful of names switch to first
name
when I
follow these directions carefully. And when in create mail, the
To/Name
column button only give 2 options--A to Z, and Z to A.
I must have set it up wrong or something, as no matter what I do, I
can't
get the whole list (it's large) to show first names first.
Would appreciate further help, please.
:
In the Contacts folder:
Change the View to "Details".
Right-click on the "Name" column heading, click on "First Name",
then
click
on "Last Name"
Click on the "Last Name" heading to sort by that, or click on
"First
Name"
heading to sort by that.
In a Create Mail window:
Click on To:
Click on the "Name" column heading... it cycles thru 4 different
sorts

I need to have my contacts with first names first, but Vista Mail
isn't
working for me. Some of them are first name first, the rest are
surname
first. I've tried manually changing them around after double
clicking
on
each
name, but there's no way to save. They flip back as before as
soon
as I
go
back to the contact list.
Any clues, please?
