Contact Lists different

I have an installation of Outlook 2003 on Win2000 where the contacts, when
selected from the folder list differs from the contacts when selecting the
dropdown list from the Address Book icon on the toolbar. The one on the
Address Book dropdown is missing random contacts.

Is there a difference between these two lists?

Also the first three contacts are not in Alpha order (first one's an M 2 is
an F 3 is a W), there are no numbers, spaces, or other characters in the
front of them.

Thoughts?
 
They are one in the same. The Address Book is simply a dynamic display of
the electronic addresses of the Contacts that reside in your Contacts
Folders. If they don't match, then you are simply displaying a Contacts
Folder in the Address Book other than the Contacts Folder you are viewing.
Only you can tell how many Contact Folders you have and which ones you
configured to have your Outlook Address Book display.
 
Thanks Russ. The Contacts from the icon are complete with just the alpha
issue, and from the Address Book drop down there is only one Contacts list
available for selection. Is it possible that that one is pointing somewhere
else? And if so, how can I determine where it's pointing to.

BTW I have run a detect and repair in safe mode and it didn't resolve the
issue.

First examine exactly how many Contact Folders you actually have in your
profile (use Folder List view to make sure you're seeing them all). To
appear in your Outlook Address Book, a Contacts Folder must be enabled as an
email address book in its properties.
Next, look here to see which Contacts Folders the Outlook Address Book is
displaying: Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing directories or
address books > Outlook Address Book > Change. >

Thanks I'll give that a try, may not be able to get at the machine this
afternoon as the attorney is in and it's difficult to kick them off their
computers so it may be early Monday.

I am new, joined jus today (this morning!). I just wanted to thank you ever
so much for this reply! It solved MY problem that I have been trying to fix
for over a week, with long hours of researching/reading on the web. Simple
answwr....very frustrating problem!
