Can anyone tell me how to get my address book in plain view like the
inbox/outbox folders are. It was simple with outlook express!

Windows Mail does not have that feature.
Click Create Mail, then click on the 'To:' icon to select your recipients.

If you don't want to write an email, but just want to peruse your
contacts, click on Contacts.

When I click on "To" I get a list of addresses, but not the complete list
that is in my contact list. At the same time, when I want to add an address,
my only choice is to add it to "Contacts." How can I get my contacts to
appear when I select the "To" button? Or, conversely, how can I chose
multiple names from my contact list if I want to send an e-mail to more than
one person?

Yeah, I discovered that after the fact, but it still doesn't make it easier
to, for example, reply to an email and want to cc someone whose contact info
is neatly organized in "Contacts" but not easily accessible when selecting
the "To" button.

Isn't there a setting to select which would default the "To" button to my
contacts rather than the incomplete address list which appears as it is right
now?

He's not seeing the complete list because the Contact list doesn't appear
when you click on To: in Vista Mail. That was one of the reasons I
installed Thunderbird mail on my neighbors Vista machine. Some other
mythical address book comes up that does not match the names in your Contact
list. No groups are shown and there is no way to delete duplicate entries.
When you purchase a machine with Vista, the included mail system should
work, in fact it should work better than the last "Outlook Express" and it
falls way short.

The Contacts feature works much better in Windows Live Mail,
so you may want to upgrade to that:

I don't know what you guys are doing differently, but I get the
same list of recipients whether I click on 'To' or go to Contacts.
That said, the Contacts feature in Windows Live Mail works better
than the one in Windows Mail.

I don't know what I'm doing differently either, but if anyone has a
suggestion as how to sync the Contacts and the "To" link or how to configure
my windows mail to properly make this happen, I'd be very grateful.

That was my point in my reply to Gary, the 2 lists are different and there
are plenty of posts with people having the exact same problem. When my
neighbor clicked on To: an address book came up that didn't match his
Contact list. He had groups defined in the Contact list that didn't show
up. There were duplicated entries in that To: list and no means to delete
them. With all the time Microsoft had developing Vista why should someone
have to download and install yet another email program, namely Live Mail?
My suggestion to anyone considering Live Mail is forget it, download
Thunderbird mail, it works.

Your argument "why should someone have to download and install
yet another email program" applies equally to Thunderbird, so why
recommend Thunderbird over WLM?
The advantage of WLM over Thunderbird is that the former
automatically imports all your WM accounts, settings, and emails.

Actually the argument doesn't apply to Thunderbird. Windows Mail was
released with Vista, one should expect it to work as well as Outlook Express
did when it was released with 95, 98, ME and XP and it doesn't. And the
real kicker is that WLM is still in BETA, Thunderbird isn't.
