When I go into contacts I can't get beyond the C's. The program freezes up & I get "program not responding" . End program comes up & it closes my mail folder.

In what view does this occur?

I am not sure I understand the question
I am in: Inbox-Microsoft Outloo
I click on address boo
From show names from: I choose contact

I am not clear on how to figure out what view I am in.

Then the view in which this is occurring is the address book, not the
Contacts Folder.
You said you went into Contacts. You never mentioned the address book.

This problem is frequently reported and seems to have multiple causes
ranging from a corrupt address to a damaged Outlook Address Book Service.
Sometimes there is no identifiable cause.
If it always occurs at the same point as you scroll down the address book,
examine all the Contacts in that region to look for a corrupt or unresolved
address.
If you find none, remove the Outlook Address Book Service, close Outlook,
run the Inbox Repair Tool on your PST file, then re-add the Outlook Address
Book Service to your profile. More explicit instructions are not possible
until you post your Outlook version.

Russ
I was not able find a corrupt address. I removed address book, but couldn't figure out how to run the inbox repair tool. Then when I put address book back in it froze up at different spot.

I am not clear on what you mean by which version.
When the mail opens up it shows "Micorsoft Outlook 2000 micorsoft office" in the box while it is opening up.
Then when it opens the top bar shows "Inbox-Micorsoft Outlook".
In tools: services it shows "Micorsoft exchange Service" , in delivery "microsoft exchange transport"
In options: mail server it shows "micorsoft exchange service" and in mail format it shows "micorsoft rich text

Thank
Linda

Then it appears you are using Outlook 2000 in Corp/Workgroup mode running
against Exchange Server, not a local information store. In that case, the
Inbox Repair Tool will be of no use and you will need to contact your
Exchange Administrator to see if he or she can look into problems with your
Exchange mailbox. I have seen no solutions for this common problem when
running against Exchange.
