Constrain points when editing shapes

Is there a way to constrain (horizontal/vertical) a point when editing a
shape without trying to eyeball a straight line?

Hold down the SHIFT key while adjusting length of object.

I tried that, but it doesn't work when editing points.

Have you tried snapping a guide to the point and then moving the point up
and down the guide?

I did try that, but to no avail. Actually, using the guidelines help me
eyeball when the line is straight, but the point will not snap to it.
