Constant notification

I have a program that always runs after I log in and Defender insists on
asking me if it's permited. The message occurs after the program has run or
while it is still running and the action box always defaults to permit and
every time I say apply with permit still showing. I know the program isn't
spyware because I wrote it.

How can I get Defender to get the message that the program is OK and stop
asking about it?

put it into the do not scan these files or location box and it will stop
bugging you

Tools/options/ advanced options
Do not scan these files or locations-
click ADD
and find the exe or file you do not want it to scan or touch.
Just make sure you save it when finished
Sometimes this works even when it is not doing a scan.

Some items that have this issue are re-created at every startup (or maybe
shutdown.) You may be able to see whether this is the case by looking at
the scheduled tasks, and clicking on advanced in the menus to show hidden
tasks. I'm not sure I know a way to handle this for such a task--maybe you
could give us more details--what's the message you get, what do you have in
the do not scan list, and what is the executable related to?

As I said this is a program that I wrote, some more details. The program
resides in a general executable directory for my programs with a link to it
in the startup folder. I went through the Defender steps to add the link to
the "Do not scan" list and it inserted the actual path to the program from
the link but not the path to the link. Everytime I started windows (XP sp2)
the message "Changes found" would come up and clicking on it always brought
up a screen showing the same suspect file name with permit as the action
choice, of course I would always select yes. Yesterday I added the startup
directory to the "Do not scan" list and there was no message today when I
started. I realize excluding the startup directory is probably not the best
thing to do but for the time being it stops the nagging.

The program in question is designed to control the startup characteristics
of programs, i.e. once a day, don't run the next program til this completes,
wait a while before starting etc.

I think you've found the solution. I agree that this isn't optimal, but
perhaps your antivirus is scanning that folder as a backup.

I have a similar problem but in defender i have no advanced options and see
no way of letting a program run at start up against current defender settings.
Any ideas please would be appreciated.
 
This setting is a bit hidden--In Windows Defender, go to Tools, then
Options. Then use the scroll bar on the right side of the window to scroll
down--you will see the area to add scan exclusions, as well as other option
choices. I recommend that folks not change the defaults without careful
consideration.

Thanks for that info Bill.
However i have tried many of the advance options options with no success and
resigned myself to turning defender off as i really need the application to
run and sync my network drive.
Yet .... it was still blocked by defender on start up and when i right click
task bar icon it opens now windows security centre (instead of defender) and
this tells me defender is ON, yet if i open defender it says it is turned off
.... now really confused.
Help !

I would not recommend adding the startup folder to the Do Not Scan list. I
would however, recommend turning off unknown item scanning. That way you
will still be protected from threats that may use the startup folder to
execute.

To turn off unknown scanning, go to Tools > Options. Under "Real-Time
Protection Options, uncheck the box that says "Software that has not yet
been classified for disks". Click [Save].
