While shutting down program not responding cause of memory usage. I look at
the event log and find 3 errorsand warnings.
1)Dhcp not able to renew address network address.
2)Attempt to power off Brew failed.
3)Service Control Manager system - start drivers failed to load Cdr_xp.
What is going on? I tried to go step by step according to discussion group
problem solutions. While doing so deleting cookies, history and such, deleting
history computor ran for many hours, after which I tried overnight still
running this morning.
Does this system need to be reinstalled?

There's a better way to post Event Viewer Error reports!

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Is this the Brew you are referring to?

How much RAM memory does your computer have?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

You should be able to gather more information from Task Manager. With
the Processes tab open select View, Select, Columns and check the boxes
before Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size. What are the figures
for the 6 processes using the largest amounts?

What is your version of Ad-Aware? Do you have all the latest programme
updates as distinguished from Definition Updates?

What version of Norton do you have. When does your subscription expire.

Both these programmes are extremely heavy on memory usage. Your peak
from Task Manager is more than your installed memory so the system has
been using the pagefile. You need to check to see how frequently this is
occurring.

Did you check the system log in Event Viewer for Errors and Warnings?
The Error Report you posted is the result of the system being stressed
and does not identify a cause.

I wrote yesterday but it looks as if it didn't make the posting.
What I said was I have the lastest free Adaware 2007 def ver 0071.0000 and
the last scan was 4/18/08.
Also I have ATT online protection Norton ver 2.5.1 2007.11.19.01
I was for a time without virus protection. What is pagefile? I will try to
find info about it.
The memory usage is greater than it was yesterday. I see the red light on my
desktop flash every second and it is timed with the refresh rate in memory
usage.

Ron

I feel that a significant part of your problem may be coming from your
ATT online protection Norton.
http://www.att.com/gen/general?pid=1409

As I understand it this is an ATT branded version of Norton. In these
newsgroups Norton has the reputation for being a resource hog. Those who
have removed Norton and replaced it with other freeware alternatives
have noticed a significant increase in performance with no loss of
protection.

Ad-Aware 2007 had a memory usage problem when first released but
Lavasoft have subsequently issued an update, which they claim has fixed
the problem. I have the same version on my computer and have not noticed
any problem. However, I only use Ad-Aware for periodic scans to back up
scans by Spybot S & D, which also runs and provides real time
protection.

The difference with Norton is that it is running all the time with a
constant heavy demand on resources. My anti-virus is only noticeable at
boot time when it updates definitions and does a full scan. The
protection at other times is not noticeable except when it has to
intercept an attempt by malware to gain access to the computer.

I am a little puzzled by reference to shutdown. This suggestion may
help. Download and install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service

UPHClean v1.5e readme.txt

I would not bother over much about the red light flashing. I enclose a
link to an article explaining the pagefile:

Thanks Gerry
I uninstalled Adaware 2007. Will try in a few days to reinstall it if system
runs better. I think your right about Norton because I see the system scaning
or searching at startup and things run slowly for a while and it's irrating
due to delays. I will check out your links and get back with you in a few
days if you don't mind?
I will also check out the price of memory this weekend!
Just a side bar. Really good show tonight on PBS called STRANGE DAYS on
Planet Earth done by National Geographic. The second show also by NG I
believe it was called Dirty Secrets. I hope this isn't against protical to
mention this? For these two shows I would risk getting banned!
Thanks again for the help
