Constant Lan activity over ADSL modem

After installing XP home edition the LAN activity on my
ADSL modem has not stopped. It does not appear to affect
anything. Any ideas what could be causing this?

The activity light on my cable modem blinks constantly, too. It's
probably hackers scanning your computer for open ports and trying to
break in.

If your computer connects directly to the ADSL modem, be sure to
enable XP's Internet Connection Firewall to protect yourself. This
