Hello,

I did a search on google and found no solution.
Is there a way to make XP pro sp1 stop accessing the hard drive constantly?
I have disabled indexing on all my partitions. I have disabled system
restore.

Thanks,

Navid

Hi Navid,

Run the Task Manager, go to View/Select Columns, and turn on the following
columns: "I/O Read Bytes" and "I/O Write Bytes." This will give you details
as to which process is accessing the disk.

Although many processes will be accessing the disk, look for one with a high
total or a fast rate of increase, especially when you hear the drive being
accessed.

Hi Kelly,

Thanks for the tip.
There seem to be two processes that keep accessing.
csrss.exe keeps reading (no write) and services.exe both
read and write.
There are a total of 25 processes in the task manager.
But, only these two have a varying I/O Read or Write Bytes.

Regards,

Navid

Thanks for the link. Thankfully, I do not have the symptoms
(the "NtLmHosts" process, the startup processes or the Smss.exe
and Csrss.exe in the windows folder do not exist).

Hi Navid,

Most welcome! See if this helps:

If your system is not part of a lan (nor do you intend it to be), go to
Start/Run/services.msc and disable Server and Workstation. Note:
Workstation may not be present if File and Print Sharing hasn't been enabled
for a lan.

No, my computer is not a part of a LAN.
Now, the disk activity is much less. Thanks.
Are there other services that I can turn off?

Thanks again,
Navid

Most welcome, Navid. And sorry for the delay in response. Am in the middle
of a move right now.

To disable unneeded startup services for a safer, faster XP, use the
"Services" Admin Tool (Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services).

If you are a single user of a non-networked machine, you can disable the
following items, with no ill effect.

Alerter
Clipbook
Computer Browser
Fast User Switching
Human Interface Access Devices
Indexing Service (Slows the hard drive down)
Messenger
Net Logon (unnecessary unless networked on a Domain)
Netmeeting Remote Desktop Sharing (disabled for extra security)
Remote Desktop Help Session Manager (disabled for extra security)
Remote Procedure Call Locator
Remote Registry (disabled for extra security)
Routing & Remote Access (disabled for extra security)
Server
SSDP Discovery Service ("Universal P'n'P", & leaves TCP Port 5000 wide open)
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
Telnet (disabled for extra security)
Universal Plug and Play Device Host
Upload Manager
Windows Time
Wireless Zero Configuration (for wireless networks)
Workstation

Thanks :o)
