Hi, wonder if anyone can help. I've had a problem with
my pc for a long time now, not sure if its XP or what.
When i start my pc it often goes on but after about 5
mins or so it just suddenly freezes and i have to
reboot. Sometimes i have to wait over an hr for it to
come back on (it comes back on every so often but freezes
straight away) When i do try to reboot it I keep opening
my DVD drive (sounds wierd) and sometimes it comes back
on! Anyone else had this?

Really?

Wow, that does sound like it would suck. How long has
this been happening? What type of computer is it? When
you boot the system it should, if it's not a compaq, give
you the system schematics.

If you're wondering if you have a WINDOWS XP version or
not, could you possibly ask someone in your household?
One way you could be able to visually indicate whether or
not you have XP on your computer is by the style of
windows which pop-up: XP's windows generally have curves
around it's windows, whereas any other version is more
rigid.

At-a-glance, I would suggest you talk to the person you
got the computer from, this is of course pending this is a
new computer(even if it's used and bought at a store
location rather than off of a friend or through a local
newspaper, etc.) to find out if you are able to return the
computer or if it's under warranty. This would ensure
efficient solutions, if not just the "one".

Hopefully that helps slightly, if not just continue
writing on this site and since I've replied, and of course
you continue to post responses, you should get more and
more information regarding your "problem". Peace.

My mates uncle builds them for a living but it also
happened to my last PC. I'm got a AMD Athlom(tm) XP
1700+ processor 1.47 ghz with 256mb RAM. Been happeneing
for ages, about 8 months but then stopped for a while and
has not started again :| My computer gets quite hot
quickly, could this be the root of the evil? *lol*

This can be overheating, particularly with AMD. It could also be that and
bad RAM. Run a thorough suite of motherboard, CPU, and RAM diagnostics on
this computer.

Make sure your video drivers are the latest as well....video driver problems
can also result in this kind of behavior.

Download memtest86 from memtest86.com and run a diagnostics test on the
memory. This sounds like a hardware problem. Start with memory. Also
make sure the system is not overheating. Are all fans running? Open
the case and blow out the dust bunnies.

Did the memory test, all fans are going and the bunnies
were blown out on monday :D Anything else?
