Constant freezing and monitor trouble

Hi, wonder if anyone can help. I've had a problem with
my pc for a long time now, not sure if its XP or what.
When i start my pc it often goes on but after about 5
mins or so it just suddenly freezes and i have to
reboot. When i reboot the PC comes on but the monitor
stays off and the light on it sflashes (ala sleep mode)
Sometimes i have to wait over an hr for it to
come back on (it comes back on every so often but freezes
straight away) When i do try to reboot it I keep opening
my DVD drive (sounds wierd) and sometimes it comes back
on! Anyone else had this? Also sometime my monitor goes
off and flashes "out of range" on it, any ideas?

I had a kind of similar problem a while back on a machine I built for a
friend. We went with a free power supply which turned out to be the
problem. I would try a different Power Supply Unit if possible and see
if the problem still exists. Also, you may want to check the heat
inside your computer and if possible, try backing up your data, format
the drive, and reinstall Windows. If none of that works, post back
