Constant crashing when on the net

Can anyone suggest why my MESH laptop (windows XP Home) keeps crashing every
few minutes when I am on the net, but doesn't when I am not. I am using a
Linksys wireless G card to access the Internet through a Linksys wireless G
ADSL Gateway. I use the same router for my desktop via an ethernet cable.
Please keep replies to understandable non expert speak. Many thanks.

First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
