Consolidating images

I am purchasing anatomical images of teeth to incorporate into my Powerpoint presentations. What I would like to do is take single images of various teeth and put them next to each other without a background to make a row of teeth. Basically I want to lift the image of a tooth without the background and place it next to another tooth without the background. Can I do this in Powerpoint and if not, can you direct me to software that can

If the area around the teeth picture is all one color, you can tell powerpoint to make this area "transparent"...see
picture toolbar on this tutorial

If the area is lots of shaded of one color, then this above method will not work. You will need to edit the picture
using something like photoshop or paint shop pro (see the same tutorial for details of how to do this)
