I do not use a password in Vista, so my PC boots up and the desktop appears
without me needing to enter a password - I have it this way for convenience.
It is networked within my home via Ethernet cable (ie not wireless) to my
girlfriend's PC, but I am not worried about her being able to get on my PC
either directly or via the network.

One thing that I do wonder about is does not having a password make it
easier for people on the internet to hack in in some way? Should I really
have a strong password to lessen this likelihood?

Yes, no password or blank password is easier for hacking. For the reason, Vista may disable the sharing for remote access if you use blank password. What you can do is setup auto logon. These links may help,

Thanks for your reply Robert. I checked out the first link but it wasn't
that helpful. Are there any other links with more detailed information with
regard to easier hacking without a password?

"Vista may disable the sharing for remote access if you use blank password".
When you say remote access, do you mean remote access via my home network,
via the internet, or both? I do have remote access to and from both PCs on
my home network.

I have no problem accessing the shared folders on any of the
three machines on my home network, two of which have no
password.
