Hi, everyone. A question regarding my newly resurrected Pentium II Compaq
Presario and a Lexmark Z-12 USB color inkjet printer:

My system originally ran Windows 98. Due to some serious errors, I recently
reinstalled the factory original software (Windows 98, First Edition) onto
this PC and later upgraded to ME. Because the Lexmark Z-12 was not an
existing model at the time of Windows 98's release, when I hooked up this
USB printer to my machine it was recognized only generically as "Inkjet
Color Printer." That device's identity is recognized as such in the "Other"
category of Device Manager in the Control Panel.

Though I recently have upgraded to Windows Millennium Edition, the proper
driver still doesn't exist in the Windows driver directory for the Lexmark
Z-12. When I attempt to add the new printer from the ADD PRINTER WIZARD in
the Control Panel, my PC tells me that there is no newer driver available
for my printer, and the Z-12 does not appear in the printer driver list.
Alternatively, when I downloaded the Z-12 driver pack from Lexmark's Web
site and then tried to install directly from its SETUP.EXE program, the
install program seemed only to give me an LPT port option, not a USB option.

What can I do to correct Windows' perception of this printer's identity? or
to get the Lexmark software to recognize and link to the USB hub?

delete the contents of 'Other Devices"- remove entries in 'printers'-
don't plug in the printer - reboot - run the driver software - shut
down or do as the install says - plug in the printer -boot - or again
what ever the software recommends.
