Dear Mr. Sanderson,
While browsing through the newgeoups & help desk topics, I
came across a response to a VPN & Internet simultaneous
connection you wrote I was having the same proplem with a
remote desktop system and when I applied your thoughts,
the client could not connect his outlook email account to
the exchange server. So I had to reenable the switch
for "use default gateway on remote network" in order to
allow email access again, but disabling internet access
while conected top MES. Just wondering if you had any
addtinal thougths as to why this might have happened?

Earlier Question & Your Repsonse Are Below!
Yes, perhaps:
The reason you are having this difficulty is a security
feature. I'll tell
you how to change the behavior first, then discuss the
security issue
briefly:
If you are using XP's built in ability to create a VPN
connection:
Open Control Panel, Network Connections.
Right-click on the VPN connection.
Choose properties
Click on the Networking tab
Highlight Internet protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties.
Click Advanced.
On the General tab, you can choose to Uncheck "Use default
gateway on remote
network.
OK (3 times) to get out.
If you are using a proprietary VPN client supplied by your
employer or
whoever you are connecting to, you will need to consult
with the IT staff
that supplied the client. The equivalent setting may be
locked.
What's the risk? You are using a VPN connection because
you want your
traffic to the remote site to be encrypted and secure
against interception.
If you uncheck this setting, under certain circumstances
traffic you intend
to be encrypted and secure might instead go out over the
Internet. These
circumstances generally involve an intentional attack on
your connection,
but in large complex host networks, such an incident could
happen
accidentally. You need to weigh the importance of
confidentiality in your
use of the connection and the relative likelyhood of an
attack against your
connection against the inconvenience of the lack of
Internet access while
the VPN is in use.
