Connection with Linksys router drops off using XP

I just got a laptop with Windows XP installed. I have
been successfully using my Linksys 4-port router with
wireless access port but my three machines all run Windows
2000.

Here's the problem: I added the new laptop to connect
wirelessly. It connects just fine with the encryption
set. However, it only remains connected for a couple of
minutes at most. The laptop loses connectivity (cannot
even ping the default gateway on the router) to the
internet and often it causes the connection to drop for
the rest of the machines connected to the router as
well. The only way to fix the connectivity issue is to
turn the laptop off, re-start the router and continue
using only my Windows 2000 machines. If I bring up the
laptop with XP again, same thing occurs.

I know someone must have run into this using XP and a
Linksys router. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks.

Bob,

First, I'd like to say thank you for taking the time to
post such a lengthy reply. After posting the question, I
began to think that I got the Linksys router prior to the
emergence of XP and that I may have a firmware issue.
Linksys has a couple of model versions with the same model
number so had a couple of issues trying to get the correct
firmware upgrade. About 20 minutes ago, finally got the
firmware upgraded, re-configure the router for encryption
and DHCP. Things seem to be running great right now. The
new laptop (IBM Thinkpad) is online and working and the
other clients in my network running Win 2k are still
online as well. I will keep you message on hand if the
problem comes back but (without jinxing it) I think it is
resolved.

Thanks again for your post. I appreciate it.
