Is there any way to find out through XP the speed of my internet connection?
Seems I remember something from far back in the dark ages of the internet
(the DOS period) that you could hover over some icon and find out how fast
the connection speed was. Thanks for your input.

Thanks so much. Did the test and it came out 894.2Kb - not sure if that is
what my provider claims or not.

That icon looks like two monitors next to each other and it's located in
notification area or system tray (where clock is.). If you see one while
connected, place cursor over it and a box might show with connection speed.
If nothing shows but the icon, right click on it, then click on "Status".
This gets a dialog box with all the stats. Among them is connection speed
(mine is third item down) which should show a figure followed by "kbps" for
kilobauds per second. The higher the figure, the faster your connection is.
Mine shows in range of 50-52 kbps ; yours may be higher or lower.

The only problem is that the displayed number may be that of the ethernet
connection rated speed
rather than that of an actual dynamic speed of an internet connection--
Ethernet connections usually 10.0 Mbps or 100.0 Mbps
Computer to router, or computer to broadband modem.
In my case-- Computer to router 100.0 Mbps
Router to modem 10.0 Mbps (Modem limited)
Modem to internet -- whatever the IP is allowing at that point in time up
to ~7M to me, and up to ~512k from me.
Last measured speed to Atlanta GA server 3,406M, 401k
