CONNECTION SHARING BROKEN?

I've got Win2K server setup for connection sharing on a small office
network. The HTTP connections from the networked machines are shaky -
sometimes they work, sometimes they don't, and mail connections only work
about 10% of the time.

I've carefully examined all the network settings and don't see anything that
is obviously wrong.

What might be wrong? Where should I look?

Thanks,

Marina,

The server has 2 nics: one is a USB Motorola "Surfboard" modem, connected to
the Internet through a cable connection. The other is a 3COM card that
connects the local area network.

I should point out also, that up until about 2 months ago, I had Windows XP
Pro installed and the connection sharing worked flawlessly. I removed XP
in favor of a Win2K Server installation (for other reasons) and the
connection sharing seems quite shaky - and just plain WIERD: I get HTTP
(browser) connections from machines on the network, but sometimes it takes
forever to connect and I'll get a "DNS" error. Go back and refresh, and
then it works. Mail doesn't work, but 5% of the time. Very strange.

Does Network Connections indeed show 2 nics?
Checked the bindingorder (advanced, advanced) and made sure the internal nic
is on top?
Blank gateway on the internal nic, right?
DNS on both internal and external nic point to your DNS-server, right?

Marina,

Thanks for you reply. My responses, inline...

Yes.

is on top?

Yes - internal nic on top
Blank gateway on the internal nic, right?

Yes - the entry is blank.
DNS on both internal and external nic point to your DNS-server, right?

The external nic is setup to use DHCP and to "Obtain DNS server
automatically".

The internal nic is set to "Use the following DNS server addresses", but
they're both blank. (!)

To point this explicitly to the DNS server, I would use the IP address
assigned to the external nic? If that is being assigned dynamically, would
I have to determine the DNS server using ipconfig and then set it from
there?

Hi,

External nic should have a static IP.
Put the server-IP in the DNS-field of both nics.
In Administrative Tools you'll find the DNS-server. Configure it to listen
to it's own IP and enable tab Forwarders, where you put in the
ISP-DNS-numbers.

Marina,

I'll give this a try. Although, I'm not sure I can reliably get a static
IP for the external nic - my service provider doesn't assign one - it's all
done via DHCP. I suppose I can plug in the currently assigned IP and
just be careful not to cycle the router!

Also, I don't have the DNS server installed (didn't think it was necessary,
since the DNS is being done by my service provider (?)).

Hi,

Install DNS-server. W2K works much better that way. What kind of a router
have you got?

Interesting - I'll try installing the DNS server. The 'router' is just a
Motorola SURFBoard SB4100 Cable Modem.
