Connection problem

My son just moved into his own place, and had cable internet hooked up. I formatted my unused computer and got everything up and running just fine. Took the system to his place and hooked everything up, no internet, says "Automatic Private Address". Tried EVERYTHING, no connection. Brought the computer, modem, and even the ethernet cable from his place to here (I have same ISP), and hooked it all up exactly the same way, and got right on the internet. Called ISP (Mediacom) and they tell him it has to be on his end, because they can "see" his modem online. They don't know what to think of the "Automatic Private Address". They suggested he call a computer tech to come look at it. It gets on the internet just fine at my house with his modem, but not at his place. Can anyone suggest anything?

Try it on the other way too. Bring your working computer to his place and hookup with internet and see whether it is working or not.
