I'm running XP Home on new box (AMD Athlon 2800 & 512MB Ram), my connection
is dial up and I use Hosts to block unwanted sites, etc. After connecting
to my ISP whatever program I may be using (Thunderbird, Firefox, Xnews or
Dcam server) there is long delay before a connection is established with
the desired server. Once a single connection has been made all is fine &
dandy. I wonder if there is an XP service not running that should be.

Thanks!

Charlie.

If you want things to load faster try the avant
browser,it's FREE.get it from
www.download.com
type avant in the search on that site.
It has a pop-up blocker that helps speed up things, also
you can disable flash animation from a button on the
toolbar(unless you like flash animation push the
button, hit refresh and it loads the flash),looks like
internet explorer ,but loads things faster all your
favorites and everything the same, you access it the same
as IE.I found it to load 25% faster when using dial-up.I
like it because, when I got to sites that have porn flash
animation(like the site www.steakandcheese.com)they have
porn flash on the side as advertisement,it takes IE 30
seconds to load every page on that site,Avant
browser,takes less than 10 seconds a page,that site has
been a best case for me,most load a lot quicker.Give it a
try if you don't like it add/remove programs will remove
it just as easy.and it's FREE,unless you like to donate.

<SNIP>

Maybe I was unclear but download speed is not the issue.
Let me explain:

1. I connect to my ISP - no probem.

2. I then open up my email program and attempt to get mail - it may take
up to a minute before a connection is established. Once that first
connection is made all subsequent attempts to connect are normal.

3. If I first open my browser or news reader or webcam server the same
delay is seen and this is what leads me to think that this is an XP
issue.
