Despite numerous runs of the wizard on XP and setting
access permissions on the 2000 machine to full for
everyone, I am unable to see the WIN2000 machine from the
XP. Ping finds the 2000 machine with no trouble. The
error messages that I get are "the network path cannot be
found" and/or "you may not have permission to use this
machine...". Users of the 2000 machine are not required
to use a password (or at least I think I told it so). I
tried setting up the XP computer name as a user on the
2000 machine, and also tried accessing it using another
name - administrator. Both machines are on the same
workgroup. I am using a linksys router (which defines the
name of the workgroup). I can see the other XP machine on
the network. And, I can see and access my XP machine from
the 2000 machine. I am running Norton IS on both
machines, but have disabled it on both to get access.

Same here. I am able to ping the Win2K machine from the
XP and ping the XP machine fromthe Win2K machine. I am
able to perform a computer search from the Win2K and it
sees the XP. However, when I try completing a computer
search from the XP machine, I can't find the Win2K
machine. What is also strange is that I have a printer
connected to the Win2K machine, and the XP machine is able
to print to it. Not sure how that works, seeing that the
XP machine can't search and find the Win2K machine. Any
suggestions out there?

Hi fellow workgroup people,
I am having a similiar problem with two Win2K machines
connected to a Linksys 4 port router. both machines set
up on a workgroup (same workgroup name) but cannot see one
pc from the other using windows explorer. (every now an
then just be chance I am able to see one from the other
but after rebooting then it is gone)
This used to work great and now for no reason I can't
access one pc from the other. I can ping either but can't
use windows explorer to see either or share files.

How do we report this problem to Microsoft?

Can you access shares by going to start/run and entering :\\ComputerNam
-where computer name is the name of the other machine.

You can also try to reset the router, by turning the computer off an
unplugging it for 30sec to a minute

Same here as well. Not much of a net connection WIZARD
that doesn't even address how to get to win2k - just
leaves the OS out of the list of supported OS's

Basic stuff to check
1 all computers on the same workgroup
2 all computers using same login Windows login or Clint for Microsoft
Networks
3 Make sure you have the same user accounts on win2000 and Win XP
4 In TCP/IP Properties Advanced Is NetBIOS Over TCP/IP Enabled
