Connection Manager Woes!

Here is the scenario...a roaming Windows Mobile device (not WM5) with
WIFI and WWAN capabilities needs to connect to a given url eg
"www.myserver.com", preferably using WIFI if available, if not then
WWAN.

We've spent a LOT of time googling and playing with the connection
manager configuration and OpenNet controls but I cannot get it to
behave how you would expect, whenever the app tries to access the given
URL it ALWAYS goes for WWAN.

We can kind of understand why the connection manager always goes for
WWAN, since it regards the url as an 'internet' resource, but it was my
understanding, and that of my colleagues, that the connection manager
was more intelligent and if the resource was available on a 'cheaper'
or existing connection, eg WIFI, it would use that instead. Is this
wrong, if not, why can we not get that to work?

Advice/reference/therapy greatly appreciated!!

By default, Connection Manager will use settings under "My ISP" to connect
to Internet addresses (anything with a dot in) and settings under "My Work
Network" for private addresses (anything without a dot in). Your network
card is probably set to connect to Work network, so Connection Manager
believes that your WLAN connection is not capable of reaching the Internet,
hence it dials out using your WWAN connection, presumably set up under "My
ISP".

You could try changing that setting to Internet - that might do the trick
for you.

However, what I usually do is set both Internet and private connections to
use "My Work Network" (see Select Networks on Advanced tab). When you go
back to Connection Tasks tab, you should find that you only see "My Work
Network" listed there. Set up your WWAN connection under there. Also check
that network card is set up to connect to Work. Doing all this should tell
Connection Manager to use WLAN for all types of connection if local network
conenction is available, else use WWAN.

If you are using older version of Windows Mobile, you may find that
Connection Manager does not automatically drop WWAN connection when you roam
back into WLAN though.

Hope that helps,
Darren

Thanks for that Darren, thats kind of what we were trying, but we will
go back thru it and see what joy we get. I was going to drop you an
email directly, so thanks for picking this one up!

We have also played with ItcConMan and can see this works well for
switching between wired ethernet and wireless but couldn't quite work
out what it does with/for WWAN, does it only really apply when using
private APN's?

Cheers

Chris
