Hey all,
I've been having this problem for a long time and it's really starting
to bug me as I still cannot fix it.
First up, I'm using a Diamond SupraExpress 56i Sp (SUP2084) [ISA
internal] modem with default Windows XP drivers. It's a Duron 700Mhz
with 448mb ram. This computer is primarily functioning as a router for
my connection and it's running Wingate 5.0.7.
Okay now on to the problem. My connection appears to die after an
indeterminate amount of time and downloading. Sometimes it can be
within a few minutes, other times it can take hours. The modem remains
connected (although sometimes it gets disconnected eventually I
believe) however I cannot send anything out (not sure of receiving
because obviously not easy to test). Downloads, pings etc don't work.
Doesn't appear to be a DNS problem because I sometimes download things
from a friend in another country and I always enter IP only. Also, all
existing connections, downloads etc stop/die. Disconnecting and
reconnecting doesn't help. Obviously there is no way for me to turn
off my modem but I've tried resetting it using a program I have
(believe it uses an AT command or some such) and that doesn't help.
As you may remember, I'm using Wingate. However, even with the WinGate
engine disabled, it still happens. Also, I seem to recall that once
when I reinstalled before I installed Wingate it still died. One
interesting thing is that it seems, although not 100% certain of this,
that if I download or browse on the router, it usually dies faster
then if using the internet my comp (through Wingate). Interestingly, a
while ago when I was using the router a lot, I found that if I got
GetRight to use the socks proxy of Wingate rather then connect
directly to the internet, it seemed to take a lot longer to die. Also
on the router, browsing and to some extent downloading with I.E. (and
GetRight?) seems to be a real killer whereas P2P apps like Emule and
DC++ and even CuteFTP don't seem to be so bad. One other thing I just
recently found out. Transfering large files from the router to my
computer (not sure about the opposite direction) and accessing large
files on the router with my computer, also seems to be a real killer.
Also, a while back, I was using Windows 2000 and NT4. If I recall, NT4
was fine (or at least not as bad) but 2000 was something like this.
If done a search but couldn't come up with anything helpful. Thanks
for any help all.
P.S. I don't check my e-mail much.
