What is the most effective freeware program for stopping ISPs disconnecting
on a dial-up system. OS is XP and location is UK?

TIA for advice.

I assume XP still has Netstat? Open a DOS prompt and type...
"netstat -a 240" (no quotes).
Then just minimize the DOS window and leave it running in the background.

That will get server names every 240 seconds. You can change "240" to
whatever time period you want.

Won't XP's own setting work for you? Click Start>>Control Panel>>Network
Connections and right click on the connectoid for your ISP then click
"Properties". When the Window opens, click on the "Options" tab and then
on the arrow beside "Idle time before hanging up". Set it for "Never".
XP is the first MS OS where that setting worked reliably (At least for
me.).YMMV. Good luck.

No need for a program. Do what dadiOH suggested - or get Mailwasher and
have it check your mail every 5 minutes. Anything that polls the server
will stop disconnects.
