Connection Difficulties - Http/1.1 Error

When I attempt to connect to certain sites, (example
www.target.com), I get an error : "Http/1.1 service
unavailable".

Other sites allow connection, but behave erratically. As
example, Ebay site behaves nominally until I try to
submit a bid. The system then gives me the unable to
lolad page screen. Bid has not been transmitted.
Signing in on the other computer allows all activities
including bidding.

I am using a new Dell Desktop with XP Pro and IE6.0 w/
XPsp2. Computer has conextant modem. When I try to
connect with slightly older Dell with XP Pro on the same
phone line, connection is accomplished without problem.
This is an ongoing problem.

I installed newest driver from Conextant vis microsoft
auto upgrade. No change in problem.

Computer is current on Macaffee virus protection and
scans clean.

Same situation occurs on different phone line, so line
quality is apparently not an issue

Could this be some sort of embedded and undetectible
virus (or worm), or is this a modem issue that can be
reset by some init string?

Any ideas would be appreciated greatly.

There are two HTTP 1.1 settings in
the Advanced tab of Internet Options.
You can try changing them, perhaps
clearing them. There are other setting there
that might effect this. So if that doesn't
work, I'd try setting them to defaults,
and then re-open IE and try again.

Find your host file. In XP it's located in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc.
Make sure you have "Show hidden files and folders" marked in your folder
options.

Right-click on the file called "hosts" and choose click [Properties].
Uncheck the Read-only box and click [Apply].

Open up the hosts file in a text editor such as notepad or textpad. Look
for the target.com entry. Delete the entry.

Save. Close. Right-click on the file and change it back to Read-only.

Open up a command line window. At the prompt type:

ipconfig /flushdns

....then press enter. You should be able to visit target.com once again.

I would really like to know if you find the solution for this. I have been
dealing with this for too too long. I am way beyond being driven crazy. I
too have this problem when I am on Ebay. I have tried getting help from
ebay and here. Nothing has worked. Every time it happen which sometimes is
very often and only when I am Logged In, I have to delete my cookies and
temp files. It then works sometimes for awhile, sometimes for a couple of
pages only. I have also noticed occasionally it will also happen when I go
to my BofA account. And again, not all the time. It effects my bidding on
ebay and happens often when I sign in. It gets to be so incredibly
maddening. There has to be an answer somewhere. I too have a Dell and WinXP
(Home SP1), IE6 sp2. I am on a Direcway LAN.

I am wondering if the Windows SP2 would solve this problem.

I will be following your emails and hope you will let us know if you have
solved the problem.
