I have a\small network of 4 computers which all used to
run fine on the internet. Today i unplugged most of it to
tidy the wires up, I must stress that all the wires are
in correctly i have checked these a million times. Now
the damn thing won't work. I have had the adsl modem
checked and this is fine, i think that the router from
which the adsl goes to is ok as well and i know the
actual line is ok to having rang BT and checked it
myself. The network icons on the machines are showing
that there is a connection enabled although none are
letting me on the internet, I know this is not much info
but is there something i am missing here?

i did exactly the same thing. i unplugged all my cables
to straighten them up. i was careful to document which
cables went where. when i plugged them all back in, i
could connect to the internet from my host machine but
when i attempt to run the network setup wizard, it
reports that "an error occurred during configuration of
the network". it gives no indication of what went wrong.
i can't really tell from the nsw.log file where the
problem lies. at the end of the log file i read:

"ICS Failed to Share 1394 Connection as a Private
connection.
Adapter Configuration for Home Networking failed."

(i have a firewire card installed on my machine, which is
not used.)

i do notice in the network setup wizard that when i have
made all my choices (or rather the wizard has made
assumptions for me) is see that the internet connection
is my local area connection and "Connecton to your
network" is "1394 connection". my guess is that windows
xp is trying to set up the 1394 connection as the network
connection, instead of the local area connection.

i have windows xp. i am connected to the internet:

internet -> dsl modem -> router -> host pc
|-> client pc

the setup worked just fine before i unplugged everything
and plugged them back in.
