connecting XP to W98

when I ran my PC and my laptop both with W98, I use to
connect them together with a direct cable via their
network card giving them IP address. That allowed me fast
transfer, sharing printers, ...
Since I installed XP on the PC, I cannot link the laptop
(W98) trhough the same process. It does not work. what do
I do wrong?
I am only able of connecting them through the LPT1 port,
which is very slow.
