We have a laptop with Windows XP and a desktop with
Windows 2000 Professional. After scrapping the whole mess
and trying again, it turns out that XP won't connect to
2000 without doing something special, which it says is in
the XP help files but which I couldn't find. Any help is
very much appreciated!

I'm not aware of anything special about networking Windows XP with
Windows 2000 Professional. Configure both computers to obtain an IP
address automatically, and set their workgroup names to MSHOME.

Would using a DNS domain of mshome.net help? Haven't had to deal with 2000
but compatibility with 9x was due to this.
