Connecting with Router

I am trying to connect two computers using a regular router (Not wireless).
It was my understanding that when you connect the cables, Windows XP will do
the rest. I cannot get to the internet with either computer. What am I
missing? What is the fix?

Have you set up the default gateway IP? Are the computers getting their IPs
via DHCP or static? If you don't know what I'm talking about, you really do
need to read the manual like the other post says. It's always a good first
step.
