Connecting Win 2000 to a Local Area Network

I have set up several LAN's with XP on all machines. The XP Wizard makes it
a very simple to do.

Now, my neighbor has asked me to set up something like this.

One Laptop running XP and one Desktop running a version of 2000 ( I don't
know which yet.) The first objective is to have him be able to access the
'Net from both machines at the same time or, perhaps more important, access
the 'Net from either machine when the other is not turned on. I guess the
latter rules out Internet Connection Sharing.

My plan is to connect a router to his cable modem ( I have an unused router
I will lend him until he buys one), connect and set up the Laptop to the
router so that he can get on the 'Net and then do the same for Desktop. We
will worry about file sharing later.

The problem is that I've absolutely no idea what to do on the Desktop for I
understand 2000 doesn't have a XP like Wizard. I've searched the Win 2000
KB but am totally confused and at loss on this point.

Will someone point me to the appropriate KB article, if it exists, or help
me with some instructions?

Thank you very much.

Thank you, Bob.

Yes, I think that will be very, very helpful once I get beyond the point of hooking up the 2K machine to router and getting it to connect to the Internet and then move on to setting up a workgroup and sharing files. Connecting the 2K machine to the Internet is my visionary hang up right now.

Thanks again.

You may want to setup ICS (Internet Sharing Connection).

I don't think so at this point. My object is to get him to be able to connect to the internet from either computer without having the other turned on. I believe that would rule using ICS. Is that correct?

In Win 2K: Start->Settings->Network and Dial-up Connections->Make New
Connection
will start the Network Connection Wizard. HTH.
